Jacquelyn Smith Rose
CHS Class of 2010
Like many high school freshmen, Jacquelyn tried various activities trying to find her “people”. She thought she might find it on the swim team… turned out, that it was not. Jacquelyn was also in choir, which she enjoyed but she was still searching for that special “something”.
Being in theater was not intentional. She had a friend who wanted to audition for the Spring Play but wanted someone to do it with her, so Jacquelyn, being who she was, agreed. If memory serves me correctly, Jacquelyn made it into the play, but not her friend, sadly, though I think her friend did get on as a tech crew member. At that point, she was bitten by the theater bug and her choir experience extended into Madrigal Singers. Yes, she was a Choir/Theater geek! She absolutely loved Cabrillo's program and was fully involved throughout her high school years.
Jacquelyn’s CHS Senior Project was Stage Managing for the Lompoc Youth Theater’s first summer camp show, “High School Musical”. According to the Director, Joyce Mayhew, Jacquelyn is the one who convinced her that “she (Joyce) could do this”. I was aware of Jacquelyn’s Senior Project, I was not aware that she was instrumental in encouraging Joyce to pursue Lompoc Youth Theater (LYT).
Jacquelyn was a leader in her own right… by example and through her encouragement of others. Many people have expressed how she impacted their lives by her example, and/or encouragement. One of these people being her youngest brother, Caleb. He was bitten by the theater bug during his first performance in the LYT production of “High School Musical” and is still performing today in his local community.
She was awarded the Jane Carlson Scholarship which she used when she attended UC Santa Cruz after graduation because of the theater program that was offered there.
