CTE Theatre 1 (Introductory)

THEATRE 1 - P

Duration: Year, 5 credits /semester (10 credits max)                                                                  Grade: 9-12

Prerequisites: None

Homework: Line memorization, in class performances, and written assignments. Students must attend all CHS mainstage productions.

 

This class is aimed at the student who wants a general survey in theatre. The course will include theatre history, theatre analysis, theatre terminology, styles/genres of theatre, play reading, scene work, movement, diction, audition skills, and improvisation. The class will furnish the foundation necessary for the student who wants to be a theater major or who wants to get involved in CHS mainstage productions. There will be a strong emphasis on reading, writing, group collaboration and communication skills. Students will gain theatrical experience through project based learning by performing in class for their peers. Students may also have the opportunity to learn about stage lighting, make-ups, props, sound, costuming, and scenery construction/painting.

PERFORMING ARTS CTE PATHWAY – THEATRE

CTE Theatre 2 (Concentrator)

THEATRE 2 - P

Duration: Year, 5 credits /semester (May be repeated for credit)                                            Grade: 10-12

Prerequisites: Completion of Musical Theatre 1 with a B or better, 2.0 GPA for outside class performances

Homework: Rehearsals and performances as assigned (in class and afterschool). Scene writing, critiques of performances. Students must attend all CHS mainstage productions.

 

Theatre 2 is designed to put the skills learned in Musical Theatre 1 into practice through theatrical productions. This will include performing in and/or learning technical crew positions for the main stage class productions. Performances include: Fall Evening of the Arts, Winter Play, Spring Variety Show. In addition to main stage productions, students will add to their theatre skills by taking quarterly workshops. Workshops rotate yearly and may include: movement, audition skills, script writing, stage makeup, scene acting/creating, monologue study, stage combat, group musical song singing/staging, children’s theatre, dance basics and set/prop building. Students will begin to create their theatre portfolio/body of work and start their theatre resume. Opportunities to attend/watch local professional theatrical performances (PCPA) and touring Broadway performances (Pantages Theatre and Ahmanson Theatres in LA) will be offered.

PERFORMING ARTS CTE PATHWAY –THEATRE

CTE Theatre 3 (Capstone)

THEATRE 3 - P

Duration: Year, 5 credits/semester (Repeatable for credit; 30 credits max.)                              Grade: 11-12

Prerequisites: Theatre 2 with a B or better and instructor approval, 2.0 GPA for outside class performances

Homework: Rehearsals and performances as assigned (in class and afterschool). Scene writing, critiques of performances. Students must attend all CHS mainstage productions.

 

Theatre 3 is designed to give students leadership opportunities in the main stage and in class productions and continue to build on their skills from T1 and T2. This will include performing in and/or learning technical crew positions for the main stage class productions. Students will also have directing opportunities as a Theatre 3 class member. Performances include: Fall Evening of the Arts, Winter Play, and Spring Variety Show. Theatre 3 students will have the opportunity to take advanced levels of workshops they started in T2. Students will complete their theater portfolio/body of work, update their theater resume and prepare for potential college auditions. Opportunities to attend/watch local professional theatrical performances (PCPA) and touring Broadway performances (Pantages Theater and Ahmanson Theaters in LA) will be offered.

PERFORMING ARTS CTE PATHWAY - THEATRE

Technical Theatre

TECHNICAL THEATRE-P

Duration: Year, 5 credits/semester (Repeatable for credit; 30 credits max.)                              Grade: 10-12 Prerequisites: Musical Theatre/Beginning Drama - Recommended or Afterschool Tech Crew member

This course focuses on the behind-the-scenes elements of play production. The course is primarily concerned with studying a particular production, the director’s needs therefore, creating and completing a design (set, lighting, and sound, costuming, make-up, and publicity/marketing) and evaluating the success of the design at the conclusion of the production (play, musical, dance concert, etc.). Students will read the play or excerpts from the play in order to make connections between the production concept for a show and the message/story of the play. Students learn about different scenic strategies used throughout history (for example Greek periaktoi) and how they have influenced modern scenic designs. Technical Theatre also supports other performing arts groups on the high school campus by designing, building, and painting specialty set pieces for performance needs.
